Senior Road Safety Engineer

About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support the wider road safety engineering team within the Highways and Active Travel Practice.
- Focus on road safety engineering projects, road safety audits through assisting the wider team and leading on smaller projects.
- Identify and mitigate road safety engineering problems across various highway and active travel design projects.
- Carry out road safety audits, high level research projects and the formulation of highways design standards and guidance documents.
- Assist with business development in the field of road safety and operational safety across the region.
- Produce studies for road safety and operational safety projects.
- Provide GG 119 Road Safety Audits.
- Offer ad-hoc advice for internal and external clients regarding road safety and operational safety projects.
- Assist the wider Transportation team with larger, complex projects such as UK standard, policy and guidance document updates.
- Assist with coaching and training of junior/graduate level staff.
- Manage stakeholder consultation processes as required.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Degree qualified in a relevant subject (Civil Engineering / Transport Planning or similar).
- Experience of road safety and operational safety related projects from strategic advice through to feasibility studies and scheme delivery.
- Technical awareness of local highways and active travel design standards, policies and best practice.
- Awareness of relevant UK highway design and road safety requirements within DMRB and others – such as GG 119 and GG 104.
- Experience of undertaking RSAs in accordance with DMRB GG 119 as an RSA Team Member or Team Leader on the UK Trunk Road and Motorway network or meet the competencies to allow this.
- An ability to lead small technical pieces of work such as feasibility studies, including managing and prioritising own workload.
- A good understanding of the UK road safety engineering market and geography.
- The ability to be flexible in terms of project delivery and working locations.
- Ability to manage multiple stakeholder and client relationships.
- Excellent IT skills.
- Membership of relevant technical institutions – e.g. ICE, CIHT, CILT, SoRSA.
- Full driving licence.
- Ability to assist with technical training seminars.
- Experience of projects involving consultation events.
- Certificate of Competency in Road Safety Auditing (Highways England).
- Experience of safety risk assessments (to GG 104) on the trunk road and motorway network.
- Highway design and active travel design experience.
- GG 142 Lead Assessor.
