About the role
- Advise executive leadership, the Tax Department and business teams on legal matters pertaining to federal, state and local tax matters.
- Assist the Tax Department in defending the company in federal, state and local tax controversies, from audit through administrative appeals and litigation (as necessary).
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, such as tax closing/settlement agreements, charitable contribution agreements and other legal documents.
- Direct outside counsel and coordinate with internal legal, compliance, and risk management teams to manage litigation or disputes related to tax matters and unclaimed property.
- Monitor changes in tax laws, telecommunications regulations, and industry standards, proactively advising stakeholders of impacts to business operations.
- Join a team of in-house attorneys and legal professionals, fostering professional growth and high performance.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; active and good standing with a state bar.
- 8+ years of experience in tax law, with a proven track record in federal and state tax litigation.
- Familiarity with other related legal fields, including nonprofit law and unclaimed property.
- Extensive experience negotiating and drafting tax closing/settlement agreements and other commercial documents.
- Skilled in advising and counseling business leaders on a variety of business issues.
- Excellent leadership, negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple high-value projects and deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Preferred: Prior tax litigation experience within the United States Department of Justice, Internal Revenue service, or other federal agency.
