About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Design and own the architecture of systems that stand up, scale, and manage the infrastructure Airflow runs on, leading design, implementation, testing, documentation, and rollout end-to-end
Design and evolve REST/gRPC APIs for infrastructure lifecycle management, including data modeling, versioning, and backward compatibility
Own networking and security posture, including authentication, authorization, secure communication, CVE remediation, image hardening, and Pod Security Standards compliance
Architect metrics, logs, and traces for end-to-end observability and traceability across service and network boundaries
Participate in on-call rotation, diagnose and resolve incidents, contribute to post-mortems, and track remediation items into sprints
Mentor engineers and improve design, code review, testing, and operational rigor
Own technical direction, design, and implementation of key platform areas across Astronomer's multi-tenant cloud platform and Astro Private Cloud

Requirements

What you’ll need

5+ years of experience in infrastructure, platform, or systems engineering; 8+ years typical for Staff
Track record of owning production systems at scale
Deep hands-on expertise with Kubernetes, including custom Operators/CRDs and Helm-based deployments
Experience designing REST or gRPC APIs for customer-facing UIs or programmatic integrations, including versioning and backward compatibility
Strong fundamentals in networking, distributed systems, reliability engineering, and security best practices
Proficiency in Go and/or TypeScript, or ability to learn new languages quickly
Practical experience designing and/or building observability and distributed tracing for multi-layer systems
Ability to lead technical design across teams and communicate trade-offs to engineers and stakeholders
Experience mentoring engineers and improving team-wide practices
Authorization to work in the United States is requested in the application
Willingness to relocate to New York City or already be based in NYC/nearby for hybrid work
