About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Strategically support Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease’s medical and scientific objectives across product life cycles
  • Communicate accurate and applicable scientific information to healthcare practitioners within the geographic area
  • Manage and maintain professional relationships with healthcare practitioners and key opinion leaders
  • Identify and facilitate collaboration opportunities with Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease
  • Profile the territory, identify healthcare practitioners and centers of excellence, and build relationships
  • Develop and refine healthcare practitioner engagement plans aligned with medical strategic goals
  • Provide relevant scientific and medical information on company products and disease states
  • Gather and disseminate healthcare practitioner insights internally to inform medical strategy
  • Maintain current scientific knowledge within assigned products and therapeutic areas
  • Support scientific exchange with external stakeholders
  • Provide scientific information to internal teams and functions
  • Demonstrate understanding of real-world evidence and HEOR
  • Understand clinical study design and protocols
  • Provide focused and balanced clinical and scientific information
  • Develop expertise in applicable research outcomes and conduct discussions with healthcare practitioners
  • Support externally sponsored research and clinical trials as appropriate
  • Acquire knowledge of the US healthcare system, rare disease ecosystem, managed markets, and managed-care/government information flows
  • Serve as a peer-to-peer liaison to Medical Directors, USMA Leadership Team, cross-functional partners, healthcare practitioners, and key opinion leaders

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • MD, PharmD, or PhD in biological sciences strongly preferred
  • Clinical experience in a relevant therapeutic area OR a track record of success as an MSL
  • Industry experience preferred but not mandatory
  • If lacking industry experience, therapeutic-area experience preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to achieve goals and take personal initiative
  • Ability to function as part of a cross-functional team
  • Excellent time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Leadership skills and high-level job competencies
  • Ability to travel at least approximately 70% of the time
  • Ability to travel 3–4 days per week within the region, with 1–2 office days per week
  • Required travel to medical, team, and other group meetings, potentially including weekends
  • Must live within the assigned territory
  • Ability to travel by public transportation, automobile, train, or plane
  • Ability to work comfortably in a clinical setting
  • Ability to use a computer and communicate via phone, video, and electronic messaging
  • Ability to problem-solve and engage in complex and non-linear thought, analysis, and dialogue
  • Ability to collaborate with others
  • General availability during standard business hours
  • Frequent overnight and weekend travel
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required
  • Ability to comply with Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease policies
