About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide cross-coverage and high-level CDI support across Ascension’s multi-market system
- Cover temporary staffing gaps caused by PTO, medical leave, vacancies, and fluctuating census
- Manage high-complexity cases
- Lead key initiatives and serve as a CDI subject matter expert and mentor
- Apply CDI practices and coding guidelines to facilitate complete and accurate medical record documentation
- Adapt to varied facility workflows, EHRs, and service lines with minimal training
- Support new CDS onboarding, short-term training, and regional initiatives
- Navigate multiple EHRs and acclimate to local workflows, Epic, Cerner, and CDI software including 3M, Iodine, and Nuance
- Maintain high-quality standards and continuity of CDI operations
Requirements
What you’ll need- Clinical Documentation Professional credential from the Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists obtained before hire or job transfer
- Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) certification
- High school diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience, or associate/bachelor’s degree with 1 year of experience, or 5 years of applicable cumulative job-specific experience
- 3+ years of clinical documentation, coding, DRG, and strong CDI standards preferred
- Expertise in SOI/ROM, MCC/CC, mortality reviews, and quality indicator alignment including PSI and HAC
- Proficiency with multiple CDI tools, including CDE One; Cerner preferred
- Strong technical skills navigating multiple EHRs, including Epic and Cerner
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license and CCDS certification required
- Ability to adapt to varied hospital systems, workflows, service lines, EHRs, CDI software, and remote platforms
- Strong time management, independence, and problem-solving skills
- 2 years of leadership or management experience preferred
