About the role
- Ensure day-to-day transactions such as accounts payable, cash receipts and accounts receivable, credit card transactions, and payroll are recorded properly.
- Perform timely and accurate month-end journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations (e.g., net assets, revenue, expenses, payroll allocations, etc.), ensuring that accounting schedules are updated and accurate.
- Ensuring proper revenue compliant recognition of earned revenue, restricted funding, etc.
- Ensure proper expense recognition using fund accounting.
- Ensure all finance and accounting operations comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and federal and state laws and regulations.
- Assist the Director and budget managers in developing and monitoring departmental, project, and organizational budget; assisting with monthly financial reporting needs.
- Perform fiscal year-end close activities and assist with activities and requirements of external auditors.
- Work with supervisor and Operations Director to ensure the adherence to and continuous improvement of the organization’s internal controls architecture, update financial procedures manual as needed.
- Continually seeking and implementing opportunities to streamline and improve finance and accounting operations through technology including training staff to better utilize financial and accounting software.
- Manage select administration activities, such as state unemployment and income tax registrations.
- Other duties as assigned to meet organizational requirements.
- Contribute to the APEN Action culture of team-building, emotional intelligence, feminisms, and leadership development
- Support organizing events with APEN Action members
- Engage in grassroots and/or foundation fundraising
- Act as a spokesperson and engage with communications narrative framework
- Support various areas of organizational work, events, or campaigns as identified and participate in organizational committees and teams as needed
- Manage volunteers, fellows, and interns as needed
Requirements
- At least 3 years of nonprofit accounting experience
- 3+ years fluency with Quickbooks
- Experience with online bill pay platforms, QBO, digital messaging, Google Suite, etc
- Good digital security and file management practices
- Commitment to the mission and principles of APEN Action and social justice
- Excellent financial management, coordination, budgeting and administration skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to communicate complex information effectively
- Ability to manage details, meet deadlines and produce high-quality materials
- Commitment to a culture of feedback; comfortable give/receiving feedback
- Accounting degree or equivalent experience (preferred)
- Audit experience (preferred)
