About the role

  • Build a collective vision of APEN’s work and provide leadership, motivation and support to staff and board members
  • Provide direction in developing and fulfilling the organization’s goals and objectives
  • Represent the organization with key external players and maintain external relations with funders, organizations, and agencies at local, state, national and international levels
  • Work closely with APEN’s other Co-Director and play an active role in setting organizational culture
  • Lead philanthropic partnerships and maintain donor relations; manage APEN’s diversified fund development plan (25%)
  • Develop and maintain strong external relations and lead participation in key movement alliances and coalitions (25%)
  • Oversee development, innovation, and evaluation of political, programmatic, and power-building strategies; develop organizational management and structures (20%)
  • Lead and support the Management Team to ensure a healthy and productive organizational culture (10%)
  • Ensure sound fiscal operations and that financial goals and objectives are achieved (5%)
  • Lead, support, and coordinate director level staff to meet organizational strategy and goals (5%)
  • Oversee development of organizational narrative and communications strategy; serve as media spokesperson in coordination with Communications Director (5%)
  • Support the Board of Directors to engage with APEN staff and members and meet governance needs (5%)
  • Occasionally work irregular hours including nights or weekends and travel between APEN offices

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of organizing experience in the environmental justice movement
  • Proven track record of fundraising success with both institutional funders and individual donors
  • Strong coalition-building experience
  • High degree of emotional intelligence
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Comfortable with both giving and receiving feedback
  • Comfortable leading through change and uncertainty
  • Ability to work on a computer daily for long periods of time and collaborate via Zoom, email, and other digital platforms
  • Must be vaccinated or subject to weekly testing (per APEN COVID safety policy)
