About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Operate motorized and heavy equipment for year-round road maintenance, construction, and snow and ice control
- Perform plowing, sanding, snow removal, patching, crack filling, paving, shouldering, tree trimming and removal, catch basin repair, ditch cleaning, and sidewalk maintenance and repair
- Maintain culverts, catch basins, cross pipes, and storm sewers in safe operating condition
- Keep roads and rights-of-way clear of roadkill, crash debris, and other hazards
- Follow safety standards during digging, inspections, maintenance, traffic interruption, and other operations
- Analyze and prepare for weather and traffic conditions, limited visibility, and operational controls
- Perform preventative maintenance, cleaning, and daily inspections of assigned equipment
- Repair hydraulic hoses and connections and perform basic equipment maintenance
- Provide traffic control services, including operating changeable message boards and flagging
- Respond to weather emergencies and changing conditions for tree removal, plowing, and sanding
- Travel between county work sites as needed
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent education
- Two years of full-time paid job-related experience operating highway construction and/or maintenance equipment
- Valid Minnesota Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement
- Ability to obtain a Minnesota Class A CDL with tanker and air brake endorsement within one year of employment
- Successfully pass driver’s license background check
- Ability to commit to a 24/7 on-call shift rotation
- Experience in snow removal and ice control operations in a highway road systems environment preferred
- Ability to operate heavy equipment
- Ability to perform minor repairs and primary maintenance of highway equipment
- Knowledge of state laws, federal regulations, and department policy pertaining to heavy motorized vehicles and equipment on public roadways
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks
- Ability to regularly lift 0–25 lbs. and occasionally lift up to 100 lbs.
- Ability to pass required pre-employment criminal/driving background check, drug screen, DOT physical, and other applicable qualification checks
- Required consent for FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse driving-record query
- Controlled substances testing required before employment and throughout employment for CMV-driving positions
