About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Create drawings and specifications for right of way acquisition, roadway design, traffic engineering, drainage design, and environmental impact to support highway construction and improvements
  • Support preparation of engineering project and proposal reports to maintain schedules, meet deadlines, and minimize impact on the traveling public
  • Keep contracts, proposals, timelines, and documents up to date
  • Maintain project documentation, specifications, and illustrations
  • Perform research, data collection, and analysis to support design calculations, drawings, and rough sketches
  • Provide technical and project design support to field staff during construction
  • Answer construction-related questions and perform necessary revisions
  • Assist with technical specifications for project bidding
  • Distribute documentation to design staff during highway project development
  • Coordinate engineering document reviews in the County development review process
  • Coordinate with utility companies during preliminary and final design
  • Support field personnel during roadway construction and survey activities
  • Respond to contractors, utility companies, the public, and other agencies, escalating complex issues to higher-level staff

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering required
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for required education on a year-for-year basis
  • Successfully pass driver’s license background check
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and techniques for construction, design, and maintenance of county highways and bridges
  • Knowledge of construction specifications, OSHA safety standards, environmental standards, federal laws, and state statutes
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or FE exam completion preferred
  • Ability to prioritize and manage deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to perform required physical activities, including bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment
  • Regularly lift 0–25 lbs. and occasionally lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to work across office, construction, outdoor, rough-terrain, and changing-weather environments
  • Ability to use computers, phones, office equipment, inspection equipment, surveying equipment, and related tools
  • May need to drive a county or personal vehicle between work sites
  • Successfully pass required pre-employment criminal/driving background check, drug screen, DOT physical, and/or other qualification checks when applicable
