About the role
- Lead, mentor, and develop the Workers’ Compensation New Business Underwriting team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and high performance.
- Provide coaching, training, and technical guidance to underwriters at all levels.
- Manage staffing, workload distribution, and performance evaluations.
- Serve as a key leader within the WC department, partnering closely with other managers and senior leadership.
- Oversee new business underwriting across multiple carrier partners, ensuring strict adherence to each carrier’s guidelines, appetite, and workflows.
- Act as an escalation point for complex risks, underwriting exceptions, and agent inquiries.
- Maintain strong relationships with carrier partners and collaborate on underwriting strategy, appetite alignment, and operational improvements.
- Own and optimize underwriting workflows, processes, and procedures to improve efficiency, accuracy, and throughput.
- Monitor and achieve SLA performance across all new business underwriting functions.
- Identify bottlenecks, implement process improvements, and drive automation or system enhancements in partnership with internal teams.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, carrier rules, and internal quality standards.
- Partner with Product, IT, Operations, and other internal teams to resolve issues, enhance systems, and support new initiatives.
- Collaborate with Business Development and Carrier Relations to support growth strategies and carrier expectations.
- Participate in carrier audits, reviews, and performance discussions.
- Track and report on underwriting performance, SLA adherence, productivity, and quality metrics.
- Analyze trends to identify opportunities for improvement or training.
- Provide insights and recommendations to leadership on team performance, risk trends, and operational needs.
Requirements
- 5–7+ years of Workers’ Compensation underwriting experience , preferably within an MGA or multi‑carrier environment.
- 3+ years of people management experience , leading underwriters or underwriting teams.
- Strong understanding of WC class codes, rating, appetite guidelines, and underwriting best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple carriers, guidelines, and workflows simultaneously.
- Proven success in process optimization, workflow design, and operational improvement.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and manage competing deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills — clear, calm, and effective with internal teams, agents, and carrier partners.
- Comfortable operating in a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
- Proficiency in MC Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
