About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead teams to produce technically sound engineering solutions complying with technical standards and client requirements
  • Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation for scheme deliverables
  • Oversee junior staff and take responsibility for their actions
  • Control project budgets and manage delivery costs
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives, attend progress meetings and respond to queries
  • Contribute significantly to bid preparation and work winning
  • Drive effective health and safety practices within the team
  • Support the Design Team Leader on road schemes and take the lead on projects
  • Mentor junior designers
  • Act as day-to-day main engineering contact or Contractor’s Responsible Engineer where required
  • Act as Principal Designer for appropriate projects
  • Manage a medium-sized, locally based single-discipline technical team

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Developed experience and expertise in the relevant technical field, probably gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent
  • Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions while working unsupervised and supervising junior staff
  • Experience managing health, safety and welfare tasks, including Amey’s Integrated Management System and CDM Regulations
  • Ability to act as day-to-day main engineering contact or Contractor’s Responsible Engineer where required
  • Knowledge and experience of design and specification processes, with ability to advise others
  • Ability to check designs to a high standard
  • Highly experienced with relevant software and analytical tools
  • Good understanding of CDM and risk assessment
  • Substantial experience managing and communicating project hazards and risks, including mitigation and transference
  • Supervisory and people management skills
  • Ability to manage a medium-sized, locally based single-discipline technical team
  • Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts
  • Good understanding of DMRB and Eurocodes for highway bridge design, strengthening, refurbishment and assessment
