About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and develop a team of regulatory professionals, fostering technical excellence and supporting career growth
  • Drive strategy and execution of I&M regulatory filings, including: Base rate cases and riders, Integrated Resource Plans (IRPs), CPCNs and generation/resource filings, Fuel, transmission, and other cost recovery mechanisms
  • Oversee development of testimony, exhibits, and discovery responses, ensuring high-quality, defensible regulatory positions
  • Serve as a company witness and subject matter expert, supporting hearings, negotiations, and regulatory proceedings
  • Contributes to and could lead negotiations and processes associated with jurisdiction operational issues for I&M while advocating policies developed as part of the management team
  • Develops and implements plans by establishing measurable goals, objectives, and requirements relative to regulated functions and responsibilities and reviews planned work of others; oversees process teams and monitors timely completion of special projects.
  • Regulatory team leader applying knowledge to make complex decisions based on calculated risk; understands the impact of the decisions made on other organizational units internal and external of the company; possesses the knowledge to defend decisions that are made in the interest of the company; demonstrates the ability to extrapolate beyond facts to reach a logical conclusion.
  • Leads activities of the organization and outside resources, to perform regulatory activities such as filing preparation, interrogatory support, hearing participation, legal briefing, final order or settlement process; consults with and advises the operating company staff and/or service corporation staff of matters affecting rates and regulation.
  • Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills; identifies, clarifies, resolves, and initiates solutions to specialized problems that sometimes involve data analysis; develops opportunities, new ideas, and approaches.
  • Manages the preparation and presentation of complex regulatory subjects in a clear, concise, and effective manner to management, other business units, customers and/or regulatory bodies; effectively utilizes the network channels within the company, other companies, professional organizations and regulatory agencies.
  • Builds teams and networks that extend through the company, other companies, professional organizations, and regulatory agencies; using a comprehensive knowledge of different disciplines network channels, internal and external to the company; builds relationships to get things accomplished.
  • Challenges company and industry norms constantly evolving the regulatory process.
  • Serves as expert on trends and policies developing within the Commission and its staff that affect the Company’s operation or trends in positions for the industry.
  • Assist in the coordination between central business unit personnel and operating company personnel to ensure that regulatory strategy, interface with regulatory bodies, and responses to regulatory inquiries are aligned and consistent with AEP policy and strategy.
  • Monitor evolving regulatory and legislative developments, positioning I&M to respond proactively to industry changes
  • Serve as a known leader on industry issues and interact with commission, staff, and industry stakeholders as a subject matter expert.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business administration, accounting, finance, management, or related field
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience with emphasis on one or more of the following - utility accounting and applications, rates, tariff development and application, commercial operations, management, and/or other pertinent experience
  • Previous leadership experience is preferred
  • Electric utility experience is preferred
  • Strong accounting or budgeting background is preferred
  • Must possess superior levels of initiative, planning and organization skills, oral/written communication, and presentation skills
  • Strong knowledge of utility industry issues and the regulatory/legislative process.
