About the role

  • Identify root causes of system failures or malfunctions by examining data, conducting investigations, and utilizing analytical techniques to pinpoint protective relay issues on the Bulk Electric System
  • Review oscillography and sequential event records to determine causes of operations and troubleshoot relay settings
  • Apply advanced Protection and Controls knowledge across line, transformer, generator, and bus protections; apply Protection and Control design concepts
  • Provide guidance, direction, and training to other engineers; lead, facilitate and coordinate work activities
  • Ensure work complies with company policies, standards, and external regulations; promote engineering professionalism
  • Participate in planning and development of project plans, establish measurable goals, and coordinate cost projections and scheduling
  • Identify, analyze, and initiate solutions to routine and complex problems; develop new ideas and approaches
  • Prepare, review, and present complex technical reports to management and external bodies; lead meetings effectively
  • Manage project budgets using cost management techniques and understand business impacts

Requirements

  • Typically 6 or more years of related engineering experience for Engineer Senior (or 4 years with a Master’s/PhD)
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred
  • For Engineering Technologist Senior: typically 6 or more years of related experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET-accredited) OR Bachelor’s in engineering technology (ABET) for technologist
  • Acceptable alternative education paths described (non-ABET + advanced degree) and possible VP waiver for non-ABET programs
  • Advanced knowledge of Protection and Controls schemes (line, transformer, generator, bus protections)
  • Understanding of Protection and Control design concepts; AEP specific designs preferred
  • Ability to review oscillography and sequential event records
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues with relay settings
  • Experience with scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts) for planning and budgeting
  • Ability to lead, facilitate, and coordinate work activities and provide guidance to other engineers
  • Ability to develop and prepare technical reports and lead meetings
  • Overtime and on call availability with minimal travel
