About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform engineering design review and analysis assignments for significant or smaller, less complex projects
- Review engineering plans with minimal or no supervision for compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and contract commitments
- Provide technical advice to field operations and other technical offices
- Apply conventional engineering practices to moderately complex problems, including conflicting design requirements, material standards, and multidisciplinary coordination
- Propose new approaches and recommend changes to methods, procedures, or designs
- Draft technically accurate and timely reports and written responses
- Interact with clients to identify and resolve technical problems
- Prepare weekly reports and billing for all work performed
- Communicate workload status to appropriate team members
- Work autonomously or as a team member
- Implement and maintain ABS Quality System requirements after ABS Quality System training
- Report to a senior-level engineer or technical manager; no direct reports
Requirements
What you’ll need- B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Marine, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or other related disciplines
- Masters / Ph.D. graduates with no experience may be hired as Engineer II if degrees are specific to the position
- Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software
- Exposure to Finite Element Method through coursework or supervised research for hull backgrounds
- For experienced hull engineers: 10 or more years of related engineering experience, or a professional/chartered engineer license and 5 or more years of related engineering experience, or 2 years as Engineer I
- For experienced machinery engineers: 10 or more years of related engineering experience, or a seagoing engineering license or professional/chartered engineer license and 5 or more years of related engineering experience, or 2 years as Engineer I
- Demonstrated understanding and ability to apply fundamental classification and quality concepts, practices, and procedures
- Complex problem-solving ability, including identifying, analyzing, and proposing solutions
- Good command of the English language with oral and written communication ability
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems
- Professional or chartered engineer license would be nice to have
