About the role

  • Provide legal representation, advice, or support for the organization as requested by clients.
  • Work independently to identify risks and issues and recommend solutions to solve complex problems.
  • Oversee or conduct legal research relevant to the scope of responsibility.
  • Lead functional teams or projects.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the area of specialization and help guide decision making with a regulatory and ratemaking consciousness.
  • Actively engaged in informal department management, including training and mentoring less-experienced attorneys and staff, leading department initiatives, identifying and implementing significant process improvements and driving change.
  • Broaden the identification and adoption of continuous improvement opportunities to the Legal Department as a whole.
  • Identify risks and offer solutions for resolving client projects of higher complexity.
  • Routinely provides advice to less-experienced co-workers, assisting them with their assigned projects, and helping them build trust and professional relationships throughout the organization.
  • Work collaboratively with legal colleagues, Ameren business lines, the VP of Federal Regulatory Affairs and VP of Federal Legislative Affairs to develop and implement policy positions and related strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with legal colleagues, Ameren business lines, the VP of Federal Regulatory Affairs and other internal stakeholders to develop and/or manage filings/communications with FERC including interventions/protests, rehearing requests, compliance filings, rate cases, settlement conferences and hearings.
  • Appear in FERC dockets and represent Ameren in matters pertaining to federal energy policy and supervise outside counsel activities and review related work products and manage outside counsel spend.
  • Handle other Federal and State legal matters and issues impacting Ameren and its businesses.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate Degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school required.
  • Ten or more years of experience in a law firm, corporate legal department or other comparable legal setting with experience in an area of specialty required.
  • Licensed and eligible to practice in Illinois, Missouri or Washington, D.C. required.
  • Advanced knowledge of legal primary practice area (FERC regulation) required.
  • Transaction experience in wholesale energy, interconnection, transmission and related matters is preferred.
