About the role

  • Assist the Chief Engineer in operating, maintaining, and monitoring the mechanical systems, propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and electrical systems aboard the tug.
  • Conduct routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections of vessel components including engines, gearboxes, generators, hydraulics, pumps, and electrical systems to ensure safe and optimal operation.
  • Perform regular inspections and testing of the engine room, ensuring the proper functioning of all systems and identifying repairs or upgrades as needed.
  • Monitor fuel and oil levels, water conditions, temperatures, and operating pressures, and make adjustments to maintain performance and comply with safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate service and technical logs including maintenance records and defect reports as per vessel guidelines and company policies.
  • Act as part of the operational team for the tug’s underway periods, assisting in all shipboard operations where required.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical systems in a timely manner to ensure uninterrupted operations.
  • Support docking and undocking operations by assisting with engine and auxiliary machinery readiness.
  • Ensure compliance with international, flag-state, and company standards for marine safety, security, and pollution prevention during all tug operations.
  • Regularly inspect emergency equipment, including steering systems, firefighting systems, and power backups on the vessel, ensuring full operational readiness for emergencies.
  • Work with the Chief Engineer and other crew members to ensure the tug's ability to meet its operational commitments, including towage and ancillary services.
  • Assist in training and mentoring other crew members to promote safety standards, operational best practices, and regulatory compliance.
  • Promptly report any incidents, safety hazards, or repair/maintenance needs to the Chief Engineer.
  • Maintain a safe and clean engine room environment and ensure adherence to safety standards and best working practices at all times.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in marine engineering, including work on tugs or similar vessels
  • Chief Engineer credential of at least 500 gross tonnage as per STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers)
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical or vocational training in marine engineering is highly desirable
  • Ability to understand and operate marine engines, propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and electrical systems
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical diagrams, schematics, and operating manuals
  • Knowledge of international and flag-state regulatory requirements governing marine engineering, safety, and pollution prevention
  • Strong technical troubleshooting, problem-solving, and mechanical aptitude skills
  • Experience with maintaining detailed engine room logs, maintenance records, and defect reports
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in confined, noisy spaces and under various challenging conditions
  • Must hold valid certificates in Basic Safety Training, Advanced Firefighting, and other industry-required certifications
  • Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment medical screening and maintain medical certifications for seafarers throughout deployment.
