About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead the AllTrails Data Science & Engineering team
  • Lead, hire, and coach data engineers and applied data scientists
  • Foster team health, professional development, and high performance through coaching and performance management
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders to translate business needs into technical requirements and prioritize initiatives
  • Advise on data, AI, and automation for internal productivity, trail content, map quality, and member personalization
  • Drive architecture and delivery of scalable batch and streaming pipelines
  • Scale productionization of ML models and algorithmic systems
  • Oversee orchestration, transformation, alerting, and organizational data flow
  • Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks and system failures to ensure high uptime
  • Champion data reliability, quality, privacy, compliance, and cost efficiency
  • Build data cataloging, documentation, and self-service tools
  • Improve time-to-insight, debugging speed, and deployment velocity
  • Report to the Director of Engineering, Maps & Data
  • Support product pods and partner teams including data analytics, finance, and marketing

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5+ years in data engineering
  • 3+ years managing data engineering, machine learning, and data science teams
  • Experience coaching senior individual contributors and developing careers
  • Adaptable, self-motivated leadership in fast-paced, ambiguous environments
  • Hands-on experience managing GCP data infrastructure and enforcing data governance
  • Production-grade data access, storage, caching, and optimization experience
  • Extensive proficiency with BigQuery or Snowflake, Dataform or dbt, and Apache Airflow
  • Expertise designing SQL/Python pipelines using Dataflow, Spark, or similar parallelized processing frameworks
  • Knowledge of dimensional and star-schema data modeling
  • Familiarity with Docker/Kubernetes, CI/CD, monitoring and observability tools such as Datadog or New Relic
  • Willingness to participate in a monthly on-call rotation
  • Experience guiding full ML lifecycle/MLOps for recommendation, ranking, personalization, and classification engines
  • Ability to lead platform foundations and applied data products
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications and deliver projects end-to-end
  • Offers contingent on successful background check
