About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide direct assistance to individuals to resolve housing crises
- Screen preliminary eligibility for publicly and privately funded programs
- Advise households on available housing types, requirements, applications, and listing resources
- Assist with paperwork and help households become document ready
- Review leases and explain tenant rights and responsibilities
- Complete assessments for homeless housing services and supports
- Advocate on behalf of households and empower them to self-advocate
- Track supports provided
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and related events as a DHS resource specialist
- Identify and communicate process and service improvement opportunities, including trends and service gaps
- Support transitions from emergency shelters and homeless system housing programs to safe, stable permanent housing
- Help prevent homelessness and maintain housing when appropriate
- Connect households with income, employment, health insurance, housing-crisis, and social-service resources
Requirements
What you’ll need- Master’s degree in a field related to social services, or bachelor’s degree in a related field plus at least two years of social-services field work, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal housing resources and access procedures
- Knowledge of local housing-stabilization resources, including mediation, utility assistance, and rental assistance
- Knowledge of the county’s homeless system
- Experience conducting searches for affordable housing
- Knowledge of tenants’ rights and responsibilities
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills in a direct-service environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to build partnerships and collaborate positively with diverse individuals and organizations
- Ability to learn and use web-based and PC software and email for reports and service documentation
- Ability to work independently and as part of a high-performance team
- Ability to manage time efficiently and work under pressure in office and community settings
- Confidentiality and professional conduct
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and judgment skills
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully in culturally diverse settings and with diverse populations
- Consistent access to reliable transportation and ability to navigate the community for work assignments
- Act 33, Act 34, and FBI clearances
