About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Performs complex administration and technical expertise in directing activities of the maintenance division to promote and foster a positive, safe, and inclusive environment
  • Develops a comprehensive maintenance program, ensuring public safety and care of all park facilities
  • Responds to internal and external customer questions, needs and concerns related to department operation
  • Develops and administers the department's annual operating and Capital budgets; monitors expenditures in accordance with approved budgets
  • Coordinates, supervises, and communicates departmental responsibilities in collaboration with other departments during essential events
  • Manages County wide special events on park property, property leases agreements
  • Performs administrative and accounting duties, generates and submits reports and documentation
  • Serves as project manager for Capital Improvement Projects; prepares and maintains project records
  • Manages the work of private contractors and volunteer groups involved in park improvement projects; ensures compliance with all codes and policies
  • Schedules, coordinates, and documents monthly/quarterly water samples for all County owned private waterworks systems
  • Manages and documents safety inspection reports for all County and City/County jointly owned park facilities

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Parks Administration, Civil Engineering, Project Management, Forestry, Turf Management, Landscape Architecture or comparable education and experience
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in the Parks and Recreation field, a minimum of 5 years at a supervisory level
  • Graduation from the NRPA Maintenance Management School and the NRPA Supervisor’s Management School (preferred)
  • Possess and maintain Virginia Commercial Pesticide Applicator license, categories 3A-3B (preferred)
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector license (preferred)
  • Certified Fertilizer Applicator's License (preferred)
  • VA Commercial Driver's License Class A (preferred)
