About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Serve as a Senior Network Engineer enabling the Department of Homeland Security mission and enterprise network infrastructure
- Engineer, maintain, configure, and troubleshoot WAN, LAN, SD-WAN, VPN, WLAN, and perimeter security controls according to customer standards and mandates
- Configure, deploy, and support enterprise-grade switches, routers, firewalls, VPN gateways, logging baselines, and load balancers across DHS operational environments
- Provide Tier 2/Tier 3 escalation support for network outages, circuit degradations, and performance issues
- Conduct root cause analyses and coordinate vendor support
- Support planning, installation, and cutover of network hardware upgrades, SD-WAN transitions, cloud interconnects, remote field sites, and infrastructure modernization
- Design, implement, and maintain SD-WAN across multiple network transports and remote sites
- Use SD-WAN virtualization to route traffic based on application type, routing policies, and network performance requirements
- Maintain network diagrams in Visio, topology maps, inventory databases, SOPs, and ServiceNow/Remedy change-control tickets
- Respond to Tier 3 critical network incidents within SLA limits and coordinate cross-functional escalations
- Implement Emergency Change Requests, Emergency Break Fixes, or Change Requests when needed to restore services
- Participate in RCA and post-incident analysis for mission-critical applications and enterprise IT infrastructure
- Partner with program and project managers on deliverables, milestones, and resource planning
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in management information systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field with 10+ years of network engineering experience, or 14+ years of network engineering experience without a bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of ten (10) years of verifiable network engineering experience supporting a large, complex Federal agency
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, MPLS, VPNs, and VLANs
- Expertise and experience with Cisco technology and firewall technologies
- Ability to perform firewall changes
- Hands-on experience with SDN technologies such as Cisco ACI or VMware NSX
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills; ability to troubleshoot complex network issues
- Ability to travel within the United States, on short notice or scheduled, up to 35% of the time
- Eligibility to receive a CBP BI public trust
- Active CBP BI or within the past 3 years (preferred)
- Active industry certifications such as CCNA or CCNP (routing and switching) (preferred)
- Experience with Zero Trust (Zscaler) and Palo Alto technologies (nice to have)
- Previous CBP experience highly desired, followed by DHS or DoW experience
- Advanced skills in at least 3 of Cisco SD-WAN, Cisco Hyperflex, Cisco StealthWatch, Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure, and Cisco Firepower (preferred)
- Willingness to be cross-trained in the listed technologies
- Ability to sit for long periods of time
