About the role

  • Gather and analyze complex statistical and qualitative information relevant to First Nations issues, including reviewing research and preparing reports on findings.
  • Develop and support policies by collecting and interpreting data and engaging with key stakeholders.
  • Make recommendations on policies, programs, processes, and procedures that impact First Nations.
  • Collaborate with AFN policy staff and colleagues across the organization to ensure coordinated and consistent policy development.
  • Maintain and update sector‑relevant datasets, information repositories, and internal knowledge‑sharing systems.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of sector‑specific work plans and contribute to broader strategic and tactical planning aligned with First Nations priorities.
  • Respond to information and action requests and communicate relevant updates across the sector and organization.
  • Draft and edit briefing notes, speaking notes, and correspondence for senior management and leadership.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships and networks with First Nations communities at regional and national levels, including gathering and validating information.
  • Plan, support, facilitate, or lead meetings, engagements, and consultations with internal and external partners.
  • Provide project management and technical support or leadership on sector‑specific projects, ensuring timely delivery and high‑quality outputs, including coordination with external contractors.
  • Support AFN procurement processes through project management and technical assistance.
  • Share expertise and contribute to the mentorship of new or junior staff.
  • Attend Chiefs‑in‑Assembly meetings, committees, or working groups and prepare meeting summaries related to assigned policy areas.
  • Represent the AFN at events, forums, or meetings as directed.

Requirements

  • Candidates must have a post-secondary degree in political or social sciences, humanities, public policy, or municipal administration, or a related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience in conducting research, analyzing information and policy experience in First Nations communities, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Candidates will have demonstrated experience in writing proposals and reports, leading discussion groups, and synthesizing information into policy positions and documents.
  • Candidates should also have experience in developing intergovernmental partnerships including CIRNA and ISC, First Nations governments and other First Nations governments and/or other related Federal and Provincial departments and their various programs and initiatives related to First Nations.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge and understanding of First Nations housing and infrastructure issues.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills; and the ability to interpret material and policies for general and First Nation audiences.
  • The incumbent must possess excellent team building, listening, coaching, group facilitation skills, and must have creative problem resolution skills.
