About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Deliver psychiatric and crisis services across the Emergency Department, medical floors, and ambulatory settings
  • Conduct comprehensive psychological, psychiatric, substance-use, family-history, and suicide-risk assessments
  • Apply DSM-V criteria and the North Carolina Mental Health Code in diagnostic decision-making
  • Evaluate treatment needs and formulate 5-Axis diagnoses and treatment plans
  • Assess psychosocial factors, coping abilities, and community support systems
  • Assist with child abuse, sexual abuse, and domestic violence cases
  • Facilitate transfers between state hospitals, outside hospitals, psychiatric units, and medical floors
  • Verify insurance benefits and obtain pre-authorizations
  • Coordinate Behavioral Health care across other Advocate sites as needed
  • Provide individual, family, and group therapy
  • Educate and support patients and families and advocate for patient needs, including court proceedings
  • Assist patients with condition management and community-resource utilization
  • Coordinate aftercare and discharge planning
  • Liaise with hospitals, community agencies, and resources
  • Identify resources and coordinate referrals across psychiatric and non-psychiatric units
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
  • Update individualized treatment plans based on interdisciplinary evaluations
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and provide consultation across departments
  • Contribute to specialty-program development and evaluation
  • Adhere to NASW ethics, state regulations, and department standards
  • Participate in continuing education, staff training, peer review, presentations, and in-services
  • Stay current on legislation, regulations, and community programs

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master’s Degree in Social Work required
  • 1–3 years of clinical mental health experience required
  • Current NC LSW, LPC, or Clinical Psychologist license required
  • LCSW required within 1 year of employment if not already held
  • Emergency Department behavioral health experience strongly preferred
  • Dual-diagnosis assessment and treatment experience preferred
  • Additional family therapy training beneficial
  • Strong understanding of DSM-V and North Carolina Mental Health Code
  • Skilled in therapeutic communication and crisis intervention
  • Strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team
  • Comfortable interacting with physicians and presenting clinical findings
  • Ability to manage fast-paced environments and complex patient scenarios
  • Familiarity with universal precautions and safety practices
  • Ability to safely interact with potentially aggressive patients and assist with restraints
