About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide patient care within the Medical Assistant scope of practice and follow applicable policies, procedures, training, and competency requirements
  • Perform rooming and visit tasks, including vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and patient screenings
  • Assist providers with or perform ordered procedures
  • Perform venipuncture, specimen collection, labeling, packing, lab order preparation, requisition preparation, and results tracking
  • Perform point-of-care testing and CLIA-approved waived laboratory tests according to orders and CLIA standards
  • Safely administer medications and vaccines following medication-administration rights
  • Process medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety and regulatory logs, patient messages, medication and supply orders, appointments, and referrals
  • Communicate effectively and timely, collaborate with teammates, and escalate issues appropriately
  • Maintain a clean work environment and clean instruments and equipment
  • Ensure equipment and supplies are operational and work areas are appropriately stocked
  • Assist with training and onboarding teammates
  • Potentially serve as a role champion or committee member
  • Assess patient data and provide age-appropriate care according to department policies and procedures

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program, structured clinical military training per DD214, or EMT; applicable divisions may accept 2 years of verifiable full-time Medical Assistant experience within the last 5 years
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification required for Greater Charlotte and Wake Forest; other divisions require obtaining BLS within 45 days unless waived by department leadership
  • Current certification or registration as a CMA or RMA from an accepted national organization, including AAMA, NHA, NHCWA, NCCT, ARMA, AMT, NAHP, NRMA, AMCA, or other listed credentials depending on division
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment where required
  • Two years of experience in a clinical practice setting as a Medical Assistant
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to build rapport and maintain professional relationships with patients, team members, and physicians
  • Proficient computer skills, including keyboarding, Windows navigation, email, and exposure to electronic medical records systems
  • Customer service skills supporting a positive patient experience
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above the shoulders throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds without assistance
  • Ability to use patient-handling equipment with another team member for certain patient lifts over 35 pounds
  • Functional speech, vision, hearing, touch, and fine-hand manipulation skills
  • Ability to work around mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood, and body-fluid hazards and wear protective clothing and equipment as needed
  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job
