About the role
- Provide strategic guidance and legal counsel on global customs and trade compliance matters
- Lead and manage the global import, export, and supply chain security program to ensure compliance with applicable trade laws and regulations (US Customs laws, EAR, and other global trade regulations) (20%)
- Monitor and interpret changes in trade laws and regulations and provide legal counsel on tariff classification, valuation, country of origin, and preferential trade programs (20%)
- Lead and develop a team of customs and trade compliance professionals to operate compliance processes, screenings, mitigation, and audits (20%)
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders including supply chain, sourcing, and engineering to ensure customs and trade compliance across business functions (10%)
- Manage responses to government inquiries, enforcement actions, and voluntary disclosures (10%)
- Lead internal audits and risk assessments related to import and export activities (10%)
- Develop and maintain trade compliance policies, procedures, and training programs (5%)
- Assist in due diligence of potential acquisitions and remediation/integration activities after acquisition (5%)
- Report to the Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer and partner with Customs and Trade Operations team
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from a US accredited law school
- Admitted to practice in at least one US state
- 9 to 12 years of experience (minimum 9 years)
- 5+ years with responsibility for global trade compliance (preferred)
- Demonstrated experience with U.S. trade controls (EAR, OFAC, Customs)
- Solid knowledge and experience with Mexico's IMMEX program
- Knowledge of USMCA rules of origin and related preferential treatment requirements
- Experience with Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program
- Experience with US BAA/BABA programs and analysis
- Direct experience handling matters with federal agencies that regulate customs/trade
- Experience advising multinational businesses on trade compliance, sanctions, exports, imports, and compliance program development
- Proven ability to provide thoughtful and clear guidance to a variety of stakeholders
- High level of interpersonal skills, communication skills, mature judgment, emotional intelligence, and independent thinking
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and develop collaborative relationships across departments
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally 25-35% of the time
