About the role

  • Responsible for product development from concept through production, including new product development, sustaining engineering support, and resolving field problems.
  • Lead mechanical product design and/or redesign, create part assemblies, and detailed part drawings.
  • Lead prototyping, assembly of samples, and management of complex product test and evaluation programs.
  • Lead product design/development projects and teams; collaborate with and influence cross-functional design team members.
  • Present and communicate project status updates to management and participate in daily management meetings.
  • Mentor and develop other engineers.
  • Apply LEAN Process methodology to projects and daily responsibilities to drive impact and improve processes.
  • Teach and lead aspects of product design including part geometry, assembly designs, and drawing generation.
  • Develop, distribute, and/or approve engineering data such as Engineering Change Notices, bills of material, and parts tracking.
  • Manage collaboration with vendor partners and internal manufacturing facilities; resolve part or assembly issues and BOM corrections.
  • Design parts and coordinate finishing requirements and tooling vendors for various manufacturing methods.
  • Generate and track capital expenditure plans and tooling vendor timelines; schedule pilot/preproduction runs and first article inspections.
  • Lead team meetings using stage gate product development; champion concept development from Project Charters and Specification Matrices.
  • Ensure manufacturability, implement process improvements, and pursue technology advancements via tradeshows/vendors.
  • Develop certification and validation test plans; submit test and prototyping requests and work with testing and prototype suppliers.
  • Review functional specifications, project charters, and competitors' samples.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or a related discipline, is required.
  • Successful track record in engineering lighting, appliances, consumer products, or related manufacturing field of electromechanical products.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and Microsoft Office programs; SolidWorks and CAD data management experience highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in manufacturing methods: progressive die sheet metal tooling, fabricated sheet metal and brake forming, aluminum and zinc die casting, aluminum and plastic extrusions, plastic injection molding, and spinning.
  • Proficiency in finishing techniques: painting, plating, anodizing, and vacuum metaling.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable standards and test processes for UL/CSA, DLC, and/or Energy Star.
  • Familiar with national and local electric codes and building construction methods.
  • Proficiency in thermal testing and test methods of recessed luminaires.
  • Proven leadership in influencing others to complete and implement new product developments on time and within budget.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including sketches, engineering drawings, presentations, renderings, and prototypes.
  • Successful in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Available to work from the Des Plaines, IL facility at least 50% of the time.
  • Available to travel domestically and internationally up to 20% of the time.
  • Can lift up to 75 lbs.
