About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support attorneys in the legal process necessary for conducting company business
- Review, analyze, and summarize issues involved in incoming litigation or administrative actions
- Determine file documentation needs, obtain proofs, and clarify facts and issues
- Organize, assemble, and interpret records and documents
- Serve as a resource for company personnel regarding corporate legal matters and departmental procedures
- Support personal injury litigation matters throughout the pendency of lawsuits
- Research medical facts when necessary
- Type and generate pleadings, legal documents, correspondence, memoranda, letters, and charts
- Schedule and record attorney meetings, depositions, and court hearings
- Maintain attorney appointment calendars
- Assemble data and provide input for computerized research and litigation monitoring systems
- Assist in preparing a legal periodical for Claims department distribution
- Provide office administration support, including mail processing, data input, courier activities, budget administration, payment processing, and notary services
- Interact with business-line customers and visitors to address support needs
- Establish and maintain case files and corresponding electronic diary systems
- Advise staff and management regarding items requiring attention or action
- Initiate, complete, and submit routine forms required by courts or regulatory entities
- Contact organizations to obtain documents
- Manage correspondence for key dates and names
- Record pertinent information and maintain files
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate degree as a Legal Assistant, completion of an ABA-approved Legal Assistant training program, or extensive experience performing Legal Assistant functions
- Experience researching, analyzing, and preparing written documents and correspondence
- Knowledge of civil litigation procedure
- Knowledge of federal and state judicial systems
- Knowledge of claim procedures
- Knowledge of principles of insurance
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of insurance defense practice
- Knowledge of insurance products and services
- Ability to compose and communicate board and executive management meeting agendas and notices
- Ability to develop and distribute board calendars
- Ability to develop, distribute, and summarize board surveys and regulatory reports
- Ability to maintain electronic and paper corporate documents
- Ability to evaluate situations, facts, and issues and draw accurate conclusions
- Ability to organize, plan, and prioritize work
- Ability to research legal files and compile data
- Competent operation of a Windows-based PC and relevant software
- Effective communication with others in a work environment and with the public
- Ability to prepare written documents, correspondence, memoranda, and pleadings
- Background and drug screen required for employment
- Regular and reliable attendance is essential
- One year of Legal Assistant experience with personal injury litigation preferred
- Knowledge of regulatory matters, company procedures, and departmental functions preferred
