About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Review assigned claims
- Contact insureds and other affected parties
- Set expectations for the claim process and initiate documentation in the claim handling system
- Complete complex coverage analysis and identify all applicable policyholder benefits
- Create additional sub-claims when needed
- Investigate claim facts to determine payment, limits, exclusions, and recovery potential
- Review damages and determine applicability of state law and other claim factors
- Evaluate the financial value of losses
- Approve payments for appropriate parties
- Refer claims to Underwriting, Recovery Units, or the Claims Special Investigation Unit when necessary
- Document and code claim files and complete claim closure activities in the claims management system
- Negotiate claim settlements
- Handle Homeowner/CAT claims valued over $100,000 in the field
- Prepare damage estimates using claims software
- Review estimates for accuracy
- Monitor contractor repair status when needed
- Assist the Claim Manager with file reviews and training when needed
- Serve the Metro Detroit area, including Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties
- Inspect property damage and work directly with homeowners to provide fair claim resolutions
Requirements
What you’ll need- Complete ACG Claim Representative Training Program or demonstrate equivalent knowledge or experience
- Eligible to acquire a State Adjuster’s license within 90 days of hire where required, and maintain it as specified
- Valid State Driver's License
- Three years of experience or equivalent training in negotiation of claim settlements, evaluating evidence, preparing estimates, subrogation claims, resolving coverage questions, taking statements, and establishing claim evaluation and resolution plans
- Advanced knowledge of the Essential Insurance Act (Michigan)
- Advanced knowledge of the Fair Trade Practices Act as it relates to claims
- Advanced knowledge of subrogation procedures and processes
- Advanced knowledge of intercompany arbitration
- Knowledge of handling simple litigation
- Advanced knowledge of building construction and repair techniques
- Ability to handle claims to Claim Handling Standards and apply ACG Claim policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Ability to work within ACG Claim systems and basic PC software
- Basic claim file review and investigation skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Customer service and relationship-building skills with insureds and claimants
- Problem-solving, sound decision-making, prioritization, time management, organization, and workload-planning skills
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle for field visits
- Ability to research, analyze, and interpret subrogation laws in various states
- Willingness to travel outside the assigned territory, potentially overnight
- Willingness to relocate and work evenings or weekends
- Preferred: associate degree in Business Administration, Insurance, or related field, or equivalent related work experience
- Preferred: Insurance Institute of America's General Insurance Program, associate degree in claims or management, or equivalent
- Preferred: CPCU coursework or designation
- Preferred: Xactware Training
- Preferred: 1–2 years of full-cycle homeowners claims handling experience
- Preferred: experience with personal property and additional living expense claims
- Preferred: experience with internal water loss, fire, and smoke claims
- Preferred: ability to walk on roofs, climb ladders, and lift up to 25 pounds
