Senior Software Engineer – Platform

• Owning the technical direction for the hybrid stack: Build the architecture for a platform that can deploy to all runtimes and maximise reusability without compromising performance and user experience.
• Shipping early and shipping real: This isn't a multi-year research project. The company is moving fast on this work.
• Building the mobile capabilities that the next decade needs: The fundamentals of how the application is assembled.
• Leading with code, not whiteboards: Canva doesn't have an architecture function — Principal engineers stay hands-on, and this role leans more hands-on than most.
• Influencing the product groups that depend on this work: As the first phase ships, you'll partner with the product groups whose experiences integrate into the hybrid application.
• Sparring with strong peers: You'll join a small group of Principal and Staff engineers shaping how Canva's frontend and mobile stack works.
• Influential Individual Contributor: While you’ll have no direct reports, you’ll be leading and mentoring Staff and Senior engineers and overseeing their architectural decisions.

Principal Software Engineer – Mobile Platform

• Build the frontend layer of the Portable Platform: Design and ship the frontend architecture that lets React engineers write once and run across web and React Native. The abstraction has to be clean enough that product engineers never have to think about which runtime they’re targeting.
• Lead the React Web to React Native transition: Navigate the extraction from a pure React Web codebase to React Web plus React Native. Make the transition clean. The decisions made here shape how Canva’s frontend codebase evolves for years.
• Own the web implementations of common abstractions: Build the web side of shared Portable Platform components — the pieces that work consistently across iOS, Android, and browser. You own the web runtime slice of that contract.
• Support the upskilling of frontend engineers: Six hundred-plus frontend engineers are moving from a world where they only had to think about web. Help them understand the new mental model — through code standards, documentation, design reviews, and direct collaboration.
• Bring SSR and React Server Components into the picture: Server-side rendering and RSC are part of this story — particularly how a backend wires up to the portable frontend layer. This isn’t the headline, but it matters, and you’ll need to reason about it well.
• Stay hands-on: Staff engineers at Canva ship code. You’ll be in the codebase, writing design docs, committing to production. The architecture work and the engineering work aren’t separate here.

Staff Front End Engineer – Portable Platform

• Build and maintain core data pipelines: Design and operate reliable, business-ready data models and transformation pipelines using dbt, SQL, and Python to support analytics and downstream use cases.
• Scale our data platform: Contribute to the design and operation of AWS-based data infrastructure (including Terraform), balancing scalability, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
• Strengthen orchestration and reliability: Help build and evolve our Dagster-based orchestration platform, improving monitoring, resilience, and operational maturity.
• Enable self-service analytics: Deliver high-quality foundational datasets and tooling that improve data accessibility and accelerate decision-making across the business.
• Improve data quality and trust: Apply software engineering best practices (CI/CD, testing, documentation) to ensure data products are robust, auditable, and trusted.
• Collaborate and automate: Work closely with analysts, data scientists, and engineers, and use Python to automate workflows and continuously improve the data platform, including supporting production ML use cases.
