About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Prune, remove, and fell trees, limbs, and shrubs near energized power lines
- Load manageable limbs and logs onto vehicles and equipment
- Use climbing equipment, powered trimmer lift trucks, ladders, hand saws, ground saws, pruners, and rigging lines
- Cut and lower branches or trunk sections from elevated positions
- Fell trees or spars and split them into manageable pieces
- Work near hazardous equipment and energized conductors under qualified supervision
- Supervise non-qualified employees near energized conductors after qualification prerequisites are met
- Apply herbicides and growth regulators to brush and stumps and maintain application records
- Educate less experienced employees on company policies, safety practices, approved work methods, and OSHA regulations
- Repair minor property damage and escalate issues to General Forepersons
- Feed brush and debris into woodchippers
- Set up warning signs, barriers, flags, hand signals, traffic controls, and direct traffic
- Coordinate with property owners, customers, and emergency personnel when blocking streets or driveways
- Inspect and perform routine maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools
- Report specialized maintenance and equipment needs
- Drive and operate assigned vehicles and equipment
- Remain on duty and travel outside the regular work location during emergencies or natural disasters
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance and comply with company policies and applicable laws
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum 3 months of experience working on tree trimming or clearing crews, or successful completion of applicable skills assessments
- Basic knowledge of tree identification, growth habits, and arboricultural techniques
- Knowledge of ANSI Z133.1 and ANSI A300 standards
- Knowledge of electrical circuits and ability to read and understand circuit maps
- Knowledge of OSHA electric power generation, transmission, and distribution standards, including 29 CFR 1910.269
- Ability to determine nominal voltage and use insulated tools near energized parts
- Ability to read, write, and understand job instructions and safety information
- Ability to recognize poisonous plants
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Ability to work long hours and overtime during emergencies, holidays, weekends, and storm work; subject to call-out work
- Knowledge of and training in tree and bucket rescue
- Ability to operate and service required tools and equipment
- Valid First-Aid and CPR cards, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's or commercial driver's license and DOT medical card, as required
- Herbicide application certification or equivalent, as required by the employer and applicable law
- Ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds occasionally and 30 pounds frequently
- Ability to travel extensively, greater than 50%
- English proficiency required for reading, writing, and speaking
