About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Prune, remove, and fell trees, limbs, and shrubs away from power lines
- Load vehicles and equipment with manageable limbs and logs
- Use climbing equipment, powered trimmer lift trucks, safety belts, climbing lines, ladders, hand saws, ground saws, and pruners
- Cut branches and trunk sections aloft and lower them using rigging lines
- Fell trees or spars and split them into manageable pieces
- Work near hazardous equipment and energized power lines under qualified supervision
- Supervise non-qualified employees near energized conductors once qualified
- Apply herbicides and growth regulators and maintain application records
- Educate less experienced employees on safety practices, work methods, OSHA regulations, and company procedures
- Repair minor job-site property damage and escalate situations to General Forepersons
- Feed brush and debris into woodchippers
- Set up warning signs, barriers, flags, hand signals, and traffic-control devices
- Cooperate with property owners, customers, and emergency personnel
- Inspect and perform routine maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools
- Drive and operate assigned vehicles and equipment
- Travel outside the regular work location during emergencies or natural disasters
- Maintain regular attendance and comply with applicable laws and company policies
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum 3 months of experience working on tree-trimming or tree-clearing crews, or successful completion of applicable skills assessments
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required
- Valid First Aid and CPR cards, or ability to obtain them within 90 days of hire
- Basic knowledge of tree identification, growth habits, and arboricultural techniques
- Knowledge of ANSI Z133.1 and ANSI A300 standards
- Knowledge of electrical circuits and ability to read and understand circuit maps
- Knowledge of OSHA electric power generation, transmission, and distribution standards, including 29 CFR 1910.269
- Ability to determine nominal voltage and use insulated tools near energized parts
- Ability to distinguish exposed live parts from other electrical equipment parts
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and communicate professionally
- Ability to read and write job instructions and safety information
- Ability to recognize poisonous plants and take appropriate safeguards
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment
- Ability to work long hours, overtime, weekends, holidays, storm work, and call-out work during emergencies
- Knowledge and training in tree and bucket rescue
- Ability to operate and service required tools and equipment
- Ability to work independently and in a group
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's or commercial driver's license and DOT medical card as required
- Ability to drive a vehicle with an attached chipper or other trailing unit
- Maintain herbicide application certification or equivalent as required
- Extensive travel requirement exceeding 50%
- Must be able to perform physical tasks including climbing, lifting, carrying, and repetitive motions, including lifting up to 50 pounds frequently
- Must work outdoors on rugged terrain and tolerate weather, noise, vibration, heights, electrical current, chemicals, and other hazards
