Layout Engineer

About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assess the technical feasibility of new vehicle concepts and derivatives through competitive benchmarking, requirement-to-specification comparison, and performance validation;
- Define vehicle vocation, wheelbase, body application, and packaging strategy by performing mass distribution and axle load analyses, ensuring compliance with functional, legal, and TRATON internal targets;
- Define and validate powertrain configurations (engine, transmission, rear axle ratio) according to vehicle mission, application, and customer use cases;
- Translate commercial, market, and brand-specific requirements into technically robust product solutions, including standard vehicles, special vehicles, and customer-driven customizations;
- Develop vehicle layout and packaging concepts from early phases, including initial sketches and 3D models, through detailed system integration;
- Ensure cross-system integration and technical coherence of chassis, powertrain, suspension, body, and auxiliary systems to fulfill the complete vehicle mission;
- Define and approve design, material, and dimensional characteristics of vehicle components and systems in accordance with TRATON engineering standards;
- Act as technical owner and approver for 3D models, simulations, 2D drawings, general dimensions for body builders, and technical illustrations, assuming end-to-end technical responsibility;
- Prepare and present the complete vehicle DMU to align product scope, content, and assumptions across all stakeholders, including management and cross-functional areas;
- Develop and maintain Technical Concept Descriptions detailing the complete technical content of the product to support alignment across engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, and finance;
- Define and manage vehicle component content (add × delete) to support program feasibility and cost analyses in close cooperation with Finance and Controlling;
- Manage layout activities using Agile methodologies;
- Coordinate and support layout and packaging development activities across engineering disciplines, ensuring milestone achievement and schedule adherence within TRATON product development processes;
- Interface with suppliers through technical meetings and site visits to analyze data, assess feasibility, and jointly develop technical solutions;
- Analyze and ensure compliance with national and international regulations, defining technical alternatives and solutions when required;
- Collaborate closely with TRATON Group brands and international development centers to enable platform synergies and harmonized solutions;
- Incorporate product life-cycle considerations into new product development, including sustainability, maintainability, and total cost of ownership;
- Ensure compliance with the TRATON Integrated Management System, including quality, safety, environmental, and legal requirements relevant to the role;
- Demonstrate awareness of environmental aspects, impacts, and applicable environmental legislation related to engineering activities.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Electronic, Automotive, or Production Engineering;
- Advanced proficiency in CATIA is mandatory;
- Advanced proficiency in Connect is mandatory; Windchill recommended;
- Good understanding of vehicle development and related processes;
- Strong coordination and planning skills in complex, cross‑functional environments;
- Structured, proactive, and solution‑oriented work approach;
- Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders;
- Experience in project management and development of technical documentation;
- Advanced/Fluent English is mandatory;
- Experience in the automotive industry.
