About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Conduct detailed forensic investigations involving structural failures, building damage, construction deficiencies, code-related issues, and causation analyses for residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
- Perform on-site inspections to evaluate structural conditions, document observations, collect data, take measurements, and preserve evidence relevant to engineering assessments.
- Analyze structural systems utilizing engineering principles, applicable building codes, industry standards, construction documents, and supporting technical data.
- Determine the cause, origin, extent, and responsibility of structural failures, property damage, and construction-related defects.
- Prepare clear, thorough, and defensible engineering reports, including findings, opinions, conclusions, repair recommendations, and supporting documentation.
- Collaborate with clients, attorneys, insurance carriers, contractors, architects, and other stakeholders throughout the investigation and reporting process.
- Provide technical consultation and expert opinions during litigation, mediation, arbitration, or insurance claim proceedings.
- Deliver deposition and expert witness testimony when required and support legal teams with technical analysis and case preparation.
- Manage multiple assignments while maintaining project schedules, budgets, and high-quality deliverables.
- Stay current with evolving building codes, engineering standards, forensic methodologies, and industry best practices.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline required
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required; ability to obtain licensure in additional states as needed.
- Structural engineering experience, with forensic engineering, failure analysis, property loss investigations, or construction defect investigations preferred.
- Strong knowledge of structural systems, building materials, construction methods, and applicable building codes and standards.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proven technical writing skills with experience preparing detailed forensic engineering reports and defensible conclusions.
- Ability to independently manage multiple projects, prioritize assignments, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience interacting with attorneys, insurance carriers, property owners, contractors, and other project stakeholders preferred.
- Prior litigation support, deposition, arbitration, mediation, or expert witness testimony experience preferred.
- Willingness and ability to travel regionally for site inspections and client meetings.
