About the role

  • Lead civil engineering design for rail and transit projects, including: Horizontal and vertical alignment coordination
  • Grading and drainage design
  • Stormwater management and erosion & sediment control
  • Utility relocations and conflict resolution
  • Access roads, parking facilities, and site development for stations and yards
  • Develop design criteria, technical specifications, reports, and engineering calculations.
  • Coordinate closely with track, structures, traction power, signals, and systems teams.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews and serve as Engineer of Record (as applicable).
  • Manage and deliver multidisciplinary design packages.
  • Interface with transit agencies, municipalities, and permitting authorities.
  • Support constructability reviews and phased construction planning in active rail environments.
  • Provide construction-phase services, including RFI responses, submittal reviews, and site visits.
  • Support proposals and technical pursuits for Mid-Atlantic transit agencies.
  • Participate in client meetings and stakeholder coordination efforts.
  • Contribute to strategic growth initiatives within TYLin’s Rail + Transit practice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s preferred)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (DC, MD, or VA preferred; reciprocity required if licensed elsewhere)
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in civil design for rail and/or transit infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrated experience with: Rail corridor design and right-of-way constraints
  • Station site civil design
  • Drainage and stormwater management systems
  • Utility coordination in complex urban environments
  • Working knowledge of AREMA guidelines and applicable agency standards (WMATA, Amtrak, MDOT MTA, etc.)
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D, MicroStation, OpenRoads, or similar design platforms
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
