About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide full-time technical support for carbon accounting and calculations at project and program scales
  • Contribute to business development
  • Lead technical design and review of blue carbon projects focused on mangroves and other tidal wetlands, including restoration and conservation activities
  • Analyze and interpret carbon emissions data using advanced biostatistical techniques
  • Identify trends and patterns to inform decision-making
  • Develop and evaluate predictive models and statistical tools for future carbon emissions and/or growth
  • Assess and model sea-level rise, sediment accretion, submergence, erosion, salinity, wetland migration, and related non-permanence risks
  • Develop and review technical aspects of AFOLU carbon projects and programs
  • Provide guidance on project typology, eligible methodologies, and carbon monitoring, reporting, and verification
  • Compile literature and field data, including forest inventory data, for GHG accounting procedures
  • Develop Excel and Python models for baseline, ex-ante carbon calculations, and ex-post emission reductions/removals
  • Visit remote project sites, primarily in developing countries, and verify fieldwork supporting forest-based carbon projects
  • Manage in-situ land-use and land-cover data collection and assess biophysical and socio-economic feasibility of NbS/AFOLU carbon projects
  • Support Project Managers on multiple international projects, including keeping tasks under budget and on schedule
  • Communicate technical topics to non-technical audiences and lead a diverse workload under time constraints

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in data collection, analysis, and interpretation related to natural ecosystems, with significant emphasis on mangrove ecosystems
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in carbon modeling and statistics
  • Background quantifying GHG emissions in successful carbon projects following market standards
  • Applied understanding of wetland hydrology, sediment accretion and erosion, water table dynamics, salinity, organic versus mineral soils, and soil organic carbon accounting
  • Proficiency in statistical software and data analysis tools, such as Python
  • Coursework in biometrics, biostatistics, modeling, programming, GIS analysis, soil science, and forest systems
  • Bachelor’s degree in applied natural sciences such as forestry, ecology, natural resources, or biogeochemistry strongly suggested
  • Preferred master’s in biostatistics, statistics, or a related field
  • Practical understanding of mathematical and statistical principles related to forest growth, yields, and harvests
  • Strong understanding of mangrove ecosystems, biogeochemical modeling, and Verra methodologies VM0033, VMD0050, VMD0051, and VMD0052
  • Experience in forest monitoring, REDD+ carbon accounting, and MRV
  • Familiarity with ACR, CDM, VCS, FCPF, and CAR accreditation programs and standards
  • Excellent MS Office skills, including advanced Excel modeling skills
  • Understanding of spatial software
  • Excellent written and fluent spoken English
  • Preferred knowledge of at least one foreign language, preferably French, Spanish, or Portuguese
  • Experience with GHG market standards, guidelines, and protocols
  • Experience working in international environments, specifically developing countries
  • Ability to work collaboratively while self-managing deliverables and meeting tight schedules
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate technical topics to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage time constraints
