Key responsibilities & impact- Define and drive technical strategy and architecture for Terafab’s manufacturing execution system (Fab)
- Lead design and implementation of significant features, services, and architectural components within Fab
- Drive technical decisions for construction automation orchestration workflows
- Design and implement complex data models, APIs, and scalable system integrations
- Define and maintain technical interfaces between Fab software and Autonomy, IoT, and Controls/SCADA
- Lead technical-debt reduction, refactoring, and system modernization
- Establish coding patterns, best practices, and technical standards
- Evaluate and introduce technologies that improve productivity or product capabilities
- Conduct architecture-focused code reviews
- Represent engineering in product and cross-functional planning
- Resolve complex technical challenges across Fab and hardware-adjacent systems
- Identify systemic issues, performance bottlenecks, and architectural limitations
- Lead production investigations, root-cause analysis, and long-term fixes
- Contribute to technical planning, estimation, and risk assessment
- Serve as technical escalation point for production incidents
- Manage a small team of software engineers, including performance oversight, career development, and 1:1s
- Facilitate scrum processes including sprint planning, backlog grooming, standups, retrospectives, and sprint reviews
- Coordinate prioritization, delivery, blockers, and dependencies
- Coordinate with Autonomy, IoT, Controls, and other cross-functional partners
- Translate product requirements into actionable technical work
- Mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance
- Assist with engineering planning, resource estimation, and risk assessment
- Contribute to hiring, technical candidate assessment, and onboarding
- Improve engineering culture, team processes, and cross-functional relationships
Requirements
What you’ll need- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with technical leadership across complex systems
- Recent experience shipping production code personally written
- Expert proficiency in Python, Django, and scalable backend services
- Strong architectural thinking and ability to design systems that scale across performance, team size, and feature complexity
- Strong experience with modern frontend frameworks, particularly Angular, including complex state management and performance optimization
- Deep experience with PostgreSQL, query optimization, and PostGIS
- Productive use of AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude Code or Cursor, with appropriate guardrails for junior engineers
- Proven experience designing and implementing complex data models with intricate relationships and constraints
- Experience defining and maintaining technical interfaces between software and hardware-adjacent systems
- Ability to develop engineers through mentorship, goal-setting, and clear communication
- Hands-on experience facilitating agile/scrum processes, including sprint planning, backlog management, and velocity tracking
- Ability to rapidly learn new tools and technologies
- Ability to thrive in ambiguous, fast-changing environments
- Excellent communication and coordination across technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience working effectively with distributed and cross-functional teams
- Prior experience managing or leading a small engineering team, including people management, performance feedback, and career development (preferred)
- Davis, CA or regional presence for easier collaboration with hardware teams (preferred)
- Experience with workflow orchestration, state machines, event-driven architectures, discrete event simulation, or industrial automation (preferred)
- Familiarity with Modbus, OPC-UA, MQTT, CAN bus, or similar protocols (preferred)
- Experience with real-time monitoring, telemetry, edge computing, or IoT data pipelines (preferred)
- Experience with AWS, CloudFormation, or Terraform (preferred)
- Expertise in construction technology, industrial automation, renewable energy systems, or related domains (preferred)
- Leadership experience in fast-paced startup or scale-up environments (preferred)
- Experience with microservices, distributed systems, performance optimization, scaling, or reliability engineering (preferred)
