About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assign and sequence ICD diagnostic and procedural codes and CPT procedural codes to inpatient and outpatient records
- Code diagnostic and procedural information using ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT-4/HCPCS classification systems
- Use computerized encoding systems for accurate coding
- Sequence diagnoses and procedures according to ICD-10-CM, Uniform Hospital Data Set, Medicare, Medicaid, and fiscal intermediary guidelines
- Collaborate with medical staff and healthcare professionals to obtain documentation and complete medical records
- Select DRGs for inpatient discharges and APCs for outpatient visits
- Ensure coding compliance with approved guidelines and conventions
- Abstract medical data and complete discharge abstracts for inpatient, ambulatory surgery, emergency room, outpatient, and ancillary visits
- Enter and verify diagnostic and demographic information in computerized medical record databases
- Ensure abstract data accuracy and integrity before billing interface and claims submission
- Routinely code Emergency Department records and enter E&M charges
- Code inpatient, outpatient surgery, and ancillary records as directed by the Coding Operations Manager
- Provide compliance and documentation education sessions to physicians and hospital staff
- Investigate and respond to coding, documentation, and compliance questions regarding Emergency Department infusions and injections and OBV
- Capture Observation and Emergency Department charges
- Maintain established productivity requirements and at least a 96% accuracy rate
- Attend continuing education functions as necessary to maintain credentials
Requirements
What you’ll need- One required credential: CCS, CPC, COC, RHIA, or RHIT
- Four or more years of recent experience coding in an acute hospital setting
- Demonstrated coding ability via a skills assessment
- Experience with Emergency Department coding and charging for injections, infusions, and ED procedures
- Experience assigning E/M levels
- Ability to operate or utilize fax machines, copy machines, microfiche reader/printer, and Windows-based computer functions
- Must meet established productivity requirements and maintain a 96% or greater accuracy rate
- EPIC experience required in the main posting; preferred in the additional qualifications section
- Successful completion of an AHIMA-approved coding certificate program preferred
