About the role
- Coach a group of 6 Grade 6 students over a 5-month program teaching AI, Gen AI, app development, AI ethics, innovation and entrepreneurship using provided curriculum
- Attend lead instructor virtual session and mentor prep/debriefs per weekly schedule (Monday and Tuesday evening sessions, prep time, async communication)
- Provide guidance, support and encouragement as students develop projects using AppInventor and other tools
- Participate in mentor training (November) and follow provided curricula
- Collaborate with mentoring team lead and attend prep calls and debriefs
- Schedule and conduct 1:1 or small group mentoring sessions and asynchronous communication with students
Requirements
- Passionate about teaching and mentoring younger students; especially invested in mentoring students from backgrounds under-represented in science and technology
- Currently enrolled or recent graduates from Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields
- Have current/recent experience with middle school STEM teaching
- Excellent communication, time-management and teamwork skills
- Comfortable speaking to small groups in a virtual setting
- Energetic and enthusiastic
- Able to commit to 5 hours per week from January 6, 2026 through June 8, 2026
- Willing and able to commit to 3 hours per day for 6 days in November for training in the SureStart AI curriculum
- Mandarin fluency very useful to support bilingual students (preferred but not required)
- Experience with front-end design, app design, and/or UI/UX development (preferred)
- Experience with AppInventor, Scratch or other block-based programming (preferred)
- Familiarity with common GenAI tools like ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, etc. (preferred)
- Willingness to complete a background check enabling you to work with minors
