About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide technical support across wastewater, sludge treatment, waste management and R&D
  • Monitor and oversee wastewater treatment processes
  • Set individual site Operating Plans and Site Process Activity Manuals
  • Optimise chemical and power usage while ensuring compliance
  • Implement operating methods to ensure final effluent compliance
  • Identify and deliver process optimisation to support budget objectives
  • Review and anticipate compliance risks, protect the environment and assist with capital expenditure investment
  • Investigate pollution incidents across wastewater treatment works
  • Collaborate with colleagues and external regulators to minimise and prevent future pollution
  • Produce site investigation reports or process audits with scientific recommendations
  • Analyse exceptional data and wastewater trends, taking action to pre-empt process issues and compliance breaches
  • Make decisions affecting plant and processes to improve site operations or mitigate risks
  • Provide technical expertise to colleagues and on-site contractors
  • Support capital schemes and remedial work at Southern Water wastewater treatment works
  • Contribute to asset management planning and construction-related issues
  • Support innovative processes, designs and operational-practice changes
  • Advise Field Performance Managers on site operation, risks and required changes

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Relevant scientific or engineering discipline: A Levels, HND or preferably first degree
  • Ability to manage work independently and work as part of a team
  • Confident communication and ability to work with stakeholders at all levels
  • Problem-solving, thinking on the go and prioritising skills
  • Wastewater treatment experience preferable but not essential
  • Willingness and ability to participate in a stand-by rota
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Successful completion of identity, criminal record (DBS), employment and education-history checks and security vetting
