About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work closely with SAF’s publications staff to grow submissions to the Journal
  • Identify opportunities for growth in impact factor and citations
  • Attract and retain qualified authors and reviewers
  • Improve Journal’s performance for submitted manuscripts, including time from submission to decision
  • Monitor and support new associate editors and evaluate their performance
  • Respond promptly to in-process manuscripts within the peer review management system
  • Assign manuscripts to Associate Editors for oversight, or act as Associate Editor if needed
  • Make final editorial decisions on all submissions and manage front matter
  • Report on opportunities for special supplement sales and sponsorship

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Active membership in the Society of American Foresters
  • US residency as the Journal of Forestry focuses on North America
  • Significant record of authorship in peer-reviewed journals or successful science communication publications
  • Experience as a reviewer, editor, publication manager, and/or science communicator
  • Preference for candidates who have served as associate editors or editor for journals in forestry
  • Graduate degree (preferably PhD) in forestry or related field with broad understanding of forestry subfields
  • Established network spanning academia, industry, and federal agencies in forestry and natural resources
  • Technological aptitude using cloud-based computing and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of manuscript and peer review management platform or ability to quickly train
  • Strong strategic and collaborative mindset to coordinate with SAF's leaders
