About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Draft press releases, media advisories, and statements that reflect the university's strategic priorities and mission.
- Pitch story ideas to local, regional, and trade media.
- Manage media lists, track beat reporters and keywords, and cultivate press relationships.
- Respond to routine media inquiries and coordinate interviews and media requests.
- Identify storytelling opportunities and develop written content including features, profiles, and news stories that elevate the university's reputation.
- Support crisis communications by drafting holding statements, FAQs, and updates; monitor coverage and sentiment.
- Track and compile daily media coverage; prepare reports and briefings for leadership.
- Conduct research to support messaging, media outreach, and reputation insights.
- Partner with internal teams to ensure alignment on messaging and timing of external communications.
Requirements
What you’ll need- 3+ years of experience in media relations, public relations, journalism, or communications.
- Bachelor's degree
- Equivalent of experience in lieu of degree is acceptable.
- Strong news judgement, writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Experience pitching media and securing earned coverage.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects.
- Experience in higher education, nonprofit, agency, news, or similar fast-paced environment preferred.
