About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct research and analysis on transformative AI, including trajectories, potential upsides, catastrophic and existential risks, and interventions affecting long-run outcomes
  • Rapidly learn new technical, governance, and field-building domains as priorities evolve
  • Produce decision-relevant landscape analyses, frameworks, memos, and briefings for funders, policymakers, and project founders
  • Balance analytical rigor with speed and respond rapidly to changes in the strategic environment
  • Reassess workstreams and pivot when more impactful and neglected strategies emerge
  • Stay current on AI capabilities, deployment pathways, governance approaches, and emerging risks
  • Self-manage priorities and workload in a remote, asynchronous, international environment
  • Contribute to internal prioritization and research-quality processes
  • Build relationships with researchers, policy specialists, funders, and practitioners
  • Elicit and synthesize expert judgments into clear, actionable recommendations
  • Potentially represent the team at selected workshops and conferences
  • Assess whether promising strategies should become internal projects or new organizations
  • Evaluate proposed projects for strategic fit, theory of change, tractability, and potential impact
  • Report directly to the AI Strategy Program Lead
  • Own strategic research projects end to end as an individual contributor

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Generalist range and track record of quickly getting up to speed in unfamiliar knowledge domains
  • Strong research, writing, and synthesis skills
  • Ability to communicate clear strategic insights in writing
  • Ability to plan work, unblock oneself, and deliver high-quality outputs with light-touch oversight
  • Excellent project management experience, including scoping, research processes, timelines, and deliverables
  • Sound judgment under deep uncertainty and willingness to pivot strategies
  • Ability to rapidly build credibility and rapport with external experts and elicit controversial or unpopular views
  • Experience or knowledge relating to transformative AI, including highly capable AI’s potential upsides and/or catastrophic and existential risks
  • Strong alignment with Rethink Priorities’ mission and efforts to reduce existential risk and secure beneficial outcomes from advanced AI
  • Professional-level English proficiency
  • Ability to attend meetings during working hours between UTC−8 and UTC+1
  • Ability to attend approximately three workshops/conferences annually, sometimes involving international flights, plus a five-workday annual retreat requiring air or train travel
  • Preferred: decision-relevant research experience for funders, policymakers, think tanks, or senior leadership
  • Preferred: background in public policy, economics, philosophy, cognitive science, computer science, or computer engineering
  • Preferred: familiarity and ideally relationships within the transformative-AI ecosystem
  • Preferred: forecasting or structured reasoning-under-uncertainty experience
  • Preferred: experience collaborating with research and operational teams
