About the role
- Own the month-end and quarter-end close process end-to-end
- Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger reconciliations
- Maintain accurate books across our entities in QuickBooks
- Process payroll in coordination with HR and ensure accurate benefit and equity accounting
- Manage banking relationships, wire approvals, and cash flow visibility
- Produce monthly financial statements and supporting management reports
- Build and maintain an internal control environment appropriate for a growth-stage company
- Prepare board-ready financial packages in coordination with leadership
- Ensure compliance with revenue recognition standards relevant to our revenue streams
- Monitor and report on venture debt covenants
- Serve as the primary internal point of contact for our first financial audit (targeted Q4 of this year)
- Select and manage the external audit firm relationship
- Prepare audit-ready workpapers, schedules, and supporting documentation
- Identify and remediate any gaps in documentation, controls, or accounting treatment ahead of fieldwork
- Coordinate with legal and the fractional CFO on any technical accounting questions
- Serve as the financial operations partner to department heads on budget-to-actual questions
- Coordinate with the fractional FP&A analyst on forecast inputs and actuals variance analysis
- Support the fractional CFO on financing events, board materials, and strategic planning
Requirements
- 5–8 years of accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years in a high-growth startup or technology company environment
- Prior public accounting experience (CPA or CPA-eligible strongly preferred; Big 4 or regional firm background a plus)
- Hands-on experience preparing for, or supporting a financial statement audit
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP, including revenue recognition (ASC 606) and equity compensation accounting
- Ability to operate independently and make decisions without a large team around you
- Experience in insurance, fintech, or marketplace businesses (comfort with commission accounting and brokerage revenue a strong plus)
- Familiarity with venture-backed startup dynamics—equity accounting, preferred stock, convertible instruments
- Experience selecting or onboarding an audit firm
- Prior experience as a first-in-house accounting hire
