About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Define and evolve Pinterest’s motion design language, including principles, interaction and transition patterns, timing, tokens, specifications, and guidance.
  • Lead motion direction for flagship and AI-forward experiences.
  • Partner with product designers, engineers, product managers, researchers, and content designers on shared motion strategy.
  • Turn high-craft explorations into scalable design-system contributions.
  • Prototype and validate motion ideas using motion studies, design tools, code, AI-enabled tools, or custom prototypes.
  • Collaborate with engineering on technically ambitious animation challenges while balancing performance, platform conventions, accessibility, and maintainability.
  • Develop or enable tools, templates, and workflows for motion exploration and implementation.
  • Apply AI-enabled motion and visual-creation tools to ideation, prototyping, and production.
  • Conduct motion quality reviews, provide actionable feedback, and mentor designers.
  • Articulate rationale, tradeoffs, and user impact behind motion decisions to teams, leaders, and executives.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 8+ years of experience in motion design, product design, interaction design, or a closely related discipline.
  • Portfolio demonstrating exceptional motion craft in shipped digital products or platforms.
  • Staff/principal-level experience influencing horizontally across teams and shaping product or design-system direction.
  • Deep knowledge of timing, choreography, easing, spring behavior, feedback, and transitions.
  • Experience creating or materially evolving scalable motion systems, including principles, tokens, pattern libraries, documentation, tooling, and governance.
  • Experience partnering with engineers to implement complex motion, including performance, technical constraints, platform conventions, handoff, and quality assurance.
  • Comfort using prototyping tools, AI, code, and technical workflows.
  • Strong product and systems thinking, including accessibility and implementation efficiency.
  • Excellent communication, storytelling, documentation, critique, and cross-functional alignment skills.
  • Collaborative, low-ego working style with interest in learning, experimentation, mentoring, and inclusive design.
  • Consideration of reduced-motion preferences, cognitive load, and diverse user needs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in design, animation, human-computer interaction, a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • US-based applicant requirement.
