Key responsibilities & impact

Lead a team of talented engineers solving difficult engineering problems
Mentor and guide team members’ professional and technical development
Develop careers and assign projects aligned with team members’ skills, work styles, personalities, and goals
Create a collaborative, inclusive, and respectful team environment
Provide continuous feedback, address performance, and recognize individual strengths and contributions
Prioritize technical and resourcing challenges within the broader Engineering organization
Drive continuous improvement in code, architecture, and processes
Grow the team by identifying business needs, addressing skill gaps, and prioritizing a diverse recruiting funnel
Maintain a prioritized backlog and establish short-term and long-term goals with engineers and stakeholders
Build relationships across Engineering, Operations, and other relevant stakeholders
Shape development practices across teams, including best practices, technology choices, and tech-stack evolution
Plan for Pilot’s accelerated growth and scalability
Manage the Infrastructure team responsible for core infrastructure, developer experience, design system, frontend infrastructure, and security

Requirements

What you’ll need

At least two years of experience in an official managerial role
At least one year managing a remote team
Experience managing engineers’ performance, including performance corrections and continuous feedback
Experience growing teams and managing the entire recruiting lifecycle
Experience with technical execution and dependency management
Experience diagnosing and resolving team morale or execution issues
Ability to foster inclusion within a diverse team and support marginalized individuals
Relationship-building experience with engineers, peers, customers, or vendors
Strong technical background and ability to participate in technical design discussions
Experience representing team technology details to others
Thoughtfulness about AI in engineering workflows and awareness of its risks and downsides
Prior engineering management experience preferred/expected, but candidates need not fit every listed requirement
Technical knowledge of Python 3.13, JavaScript, TypeScript, Vue.js, Terraform, Docker, ECS, AWS CodeDeploy, Honeycomb, and Postgres demonstrated through the team’s technology context
