About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- General Position SummaryThe Applications Manager, Energy Management is a technology-focused position within the group’s Energy Management function, responsible for building, maintaining, and enhancing the proprietary software systems and data infrastructure that support energy trading, asset optimization, risk reporting, and settlement operations.
- As part of a small team managing the energy margins of a fleet of invested in and/or owned generation assets, this position will work closely with energy management professionals, risk analysts, and IT stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into reliable, performant software solutions.
- The Applications Manager will gain exposure to wholesale energy markets (PJM, ISO-NE, MISO), commodity risk management, and the operational technology landscape of a competitive power generation business.
- Within the Energy Management function and as an integral member of the broader Asset Management function, this position supports all aspects of technology development and systems integration with third-party energy managers, data vendors, and other service providers.
- Manage, build, and maintain the company’s proprietary settlement system, ensuring accurate trade capture, position reconciliation, and timely gross margin reporting for generation assets.
- Develop and enhance automated reporting tools supporting Daily Gross Margin, monthly Asset Management Agreement (AMA) reporting, quarterly EQR reporting, and other periodic reporting requirements.
- Build core Java applications to automate data collection and scraping from secure, password-protected ISO/RTO and counterparty websites.
- Optimize SQL queries and stored procedures to improve data processing performance and reporting accuracy.
- Design and implement interactive internal dashboards connected to SQL Server data using React and modern frontend frameworks, providing real-time visibility into market positions, asset performance, and risk metrics.
- Build mobile-friendly, responsive interfaces including Progressive Web Applications (PWAs) to support on-the-go monitoring of generation asset operations and market conditions.
- Implement caching strategies (e.g., Redis) and optimize dashboard refresh performance to ensure reliable, low-latency data delivery to end users.
- Create clear, actionable data visualizations using JavaScript and charting libraries that enable energy management professionals to make informed commercial decisions.
- Build and maintain automated data pipelines to collect, normalize, and store market data from ISOs (PJM, ISO-NE, MISO), energy data vendors (PI Server, Yes Energy, Pharos), and other external sources.
- Develop and maintain PI Server tags for real-time plant operations data, supporting dispatch optimization and performance monitoring.
- Develop backend APIs using ASP.NET Core and Python to integrate data across internal systems, enabling seamless information flow between settlement, risk, and asset management functions.
- Implement authentication using Active Directory / Windows Authentication to ensure secure access to internal applications and data.
- Support the Energy Management team in the development or system design activities and implementation of third-party ETRM systems for trade capture, market data, plant dispatch, risk reporting, and settlements.
- Collaborate with commodity and credit risk management teams to ensure portfolio and counterparty risk reports are accurately generated and published on a timely basis.
- Support the development and maintenance of internal dispatch and forecasting models, including emissions forecast modeling and RGGI credit tracking for environmental compliance.
- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of internal controls, disaster recovery plans, and data backup procedures for critical energy management systems.
- Serve as the primary liaison between Energy Management and the corporate IT team for all IT infrastructure matters affecting trading and operations.
- Coordinate with the Corporate IT team regarding the setup, configuration, and provisioning of laptops and workstations for the trading environment using OGUSA standard infrastructure and endpoint platforms, ensuring all builds adhere to Energy Management requirements (market data access, trading applications, multi-monitor support, low-latency connectivity, etc.).
- Partner with Corporate IT to establish and maintain Single Sign-On (SSO) integration for Energy Management applications and platforms utilizing OGUSA standard identity management platforms, including Entra ID and SAML 2.0, while maintaining centralized identity management.
- Coordinate with external vendors (PI, Pharos, Yes Energy, etc.) for systems maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting to ensure continuous data availability.
- Coordinate onboarding and offboarding activities for Energy Management applications in alignment with Corporate IT identity and access management processes, including application access and entitlement requests.
- Escalate and track IT infrastructure issues (network, hardware, connectivity) impacting trading operations and ensure timely resolution.
- Provide application support and system development activities to the balance of the New York team members to support continued business growth.
- Collaborate with the Corporate IT team to ensure Energy Management applications and data systems operate in compliance with Daigas Group and OGUSA cybersecurity policies, standards, and best practices.
- Implement and maintain secure coding practices, including input validation, encryption, and access control, across all internally developed applications.
- Work with IT security to define and enforce role-based access controls (RBAC) for Energy Management systems, ensuring least-privilege access to sensitive market data, trading platforms, and pricing models.
- Support security reviews and assessments of new vendor applications and integrations prior to deployment in the Energy Management environment.
- Maintain audit trails and logging across internally developed applications to support compliance, incident response, and internal controls requirements.
- Support Corporate IT-led cybersecurity assessments, audits, and remediation activities related to Energy Management applications and systems.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Education- Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field
- Experience- 2–4 years of experience in software development, data engineering, or analytics, with experience in the energy industry preferred
- Proficiency in one or more of the following: Java, C# / .NET / ASP.NET Core
- Proficiency in Python and/or R for statistical analysis, data manipulation, and quantitative modeling
- Strong experience with SQL Server, including query optimization and stored procedure development
- Experience with JavaScript / TypeScript and React or a similar frontend framework
- Familiarity with REST API development, Git version control, and CI/CD practices
- Conceptual understanding of financial instruments, power markets, and energy commodity trading is a plus
- Exposure to dashboard or analytics tools, real-time data systems (SignalR / WebSockets), or energy trading platforms is a plus
