About the role

  • Represent Oakland County in civil law matters and provide counsel to County administrators and elected officials.
  • Play a key role in involuntary civil admission process under the Michigan Mental Health Code, including conducting jury trials when required.
  • Serve as a liaison with the Probate Court’s Mental Health Office, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Review legal documents, conduct in-depth research, and prepare clear, persuasive legal writing.
  • Prosecute complex cases on behalf of the County and defend the County in challenging civil suits.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex contracts between the County and third parties.
  • Utilize Countywide and department-specific legal technology to complete assignments efficiently.

Requirements

  • Possess a Bachelor of Law or a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited college of law
  • Have had at least six (6) years of full-time work experience in the practice of law, which may include such areas as real estate transactions, tort defense, auto defense, local government taxation, workers’ compensation, employment law, contracts, leases, insurance law, trial and/or appellate work, and legal issues regarding government duties, responsibilities, immunities, and privileges
  • Be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan
  • Pass the complete examination, including the employment physical established for this classification
  • Successfully complete the six-month probationary period
  • Special Requirements Must remain in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan
