About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide expert legal advice, minor assistance and casework in consumer rights, employment, mental health, human rights, housing, social security and other civil law matters
  • Run an efficient, ethical and high-performing civil law practice aligned with Legal Aid NSW standards
  • Contribute to the leadership and strategic direction of the Civil Law Division
  • Supervise and develop staff to support high-quality service delivery
  • Assist disadvantaged clients to navigate complex legal and nonlegal barriers
  • Represent clients in litigation and multiple dispute resolution forums
  • Engage with the community and collaborate with legal assistance partners and stakeholders
  • Deliver targeted outreach to improve access to justice
  • Comply with the Legal Aid Commission Act 1979, Legal Aid policies, practice standards and administrative requirements

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Admitted or eligible for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW
  • Current unrestricted NSW Practising Certificate required before starting
  • Experienced civil law practitioner
  • Deep civil law expertise and experience supporting clients with complex needs in high-volume practice settings
  • Strong people leadership capability and experience supervising staff using trauma-informed principles
  • Strategic planning and reporting skills
  • Highly developed advocacy and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated experience representing clients in litigation and multiple dispute resolution forums
  • Commitment to community engagement and collaboration with legal assistance sector partners and stakeholders
  • Willingness to complete a Criminal Record Check and Working with Children Check
  • Australian or New Zealand citizenship, Australian permanent residency for ongoing vacancies, or a valid visa to work in Australia for temporary vacancies
  • Valid Driver Licence and/or capacity to travel regularly to regional and remote areas
  • Resume of no more than 5 pages
  • Cover letter of no more than 2 pages addressing the targeted questions
