About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Define the silicon and system microarchitecture for Normal Computing’s custom unconventional compute platform
  • Drive architectural trade-offs targeting major energy-efficiency gains for LLM and diffusion-model inference
  • Lead hardware/software co-design to address the von Neumann memory wall
  • Translate transformer architectures and diffusion execution flows into mixed-signal compute tiles, memory hierarchies, and tile interconnects
  • Build performance models and establish microarchitectural specifications
  • Collaborate with compiler, RTL, analog, FPGA, and systems architecture teams
  • Define AI accelerator compute blocks, including PE arrays, datapaths, sparsity support, and reduced-precision computation
  • Translate workload analysis and research findings into implementable hardware specifications
  • Evaluate full-stack performance, power, and area trade-offs
  • Co-design the ISA and programming model with the compiler lead
  • Direct block-level pre-silicon validation and select appropriate prototyping platforms
  • Stay current with AI accelerator research and potentially publish research

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent work experience
  • Substantial experience architecting or microarchitecting high-performance digital systems such as AI accelerators or compute engines
  • Ability to translate algorithm-level workload analysis into datapath widths, pipeline stages, and area/power estimates
  • Experience using cycle-accurate or analytical simulation models for pre-RTL design decisions
  • Familiarity with quantization and reduced-precision inference approaches and their hardware implications
  • Experience writing microarchitecture specifications and collaborating with RTL engineers through implementation
  • Proficiency in Python or C++ for performance modeling and analysis
  • Familiarity with SystemVerilog or equivalent RTL
  • Ability to operate in an environment where the architecture is actively being discovered
  • PhD welcome but not required
