About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Oversee Data Engineering team operations, workflow efficiency, and productivity
  • Lead strategic planning and execution for data engineering initiatives
  • Oversee the design, development, and optimization of data pipelines and architectures
  • Provide leadership on ETL process implementation and data quality
  • Translate business needs into technical requirements with analysts, project managers, and stakeholders
  • Oversee adoption and integration of technology best practices
  • Mentor team members and foster continuous improvement
  • Establish data governance practices, operational data stores, and advanced analytics capabilities
  • Translate strategic business goals into actionable data roadmaps
  • Champion reusable data products and trusted data assets
  • Design and architect enterprise data ecosystems and data assets such as ODS
  • Architect scalable batch, real-time, and event-driven ETL/ELT pipelines
  • Lead data catalog, data quality, audit logging, and data stewardship programs
  • Define and enforce data architecture policies and regulatory compliance controls
  • Manage staff performance, coaching, talent selection, development, and performance management
  • Plan and ensure team budget and performance targets are met
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum 18 years of experience in data engineering or a related field
  • Minimum 8 years of leadership experience
  • Experience with data warehousing solutions and ETL processes
  • Experience with P&C insurance data strategy across Underwriting, Claims, Operations, Finance, and Customer Experience
  • Experience designing and implementing enterprise data ecosystems
  • Experience establishing data governance frameworks and data catalog tools
  • Experience with Snowflake and IDMC
  • Experience with operational data stores (ODS)
  • Experience architecting scalable batch, real-time, and event-driven ETL/ELT pipelines
  • Knowledge of data lineage, data quality scoring, control documentation, audit logging, and compliance requirements
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and state insurance regulations
  • Experience leading data stewardship programs
  • Expert proficiency in multiple programming languages, cloud platforms, and modern development frameworks
  • Expert understanding of machine learning concepts and software engineering implications
  • Proficiency in SQL and relational database management systems such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle
  • Knowledge of data modeling, data architecture, and data governance
  • Typically manages two or more reports
  • Familiarity with Hadoop or Spark is a plus
