About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Review electronic medical records to determine patient eligibility for inclusion in the Cancer Registry Database
  • Abstract demographic, clinical, pathological, therapeutic, and epidemiologic data per established standards ( ACoS /CoC, SEER, AJCC, NYS DOH)
  • Accession all reportable malignancies and 'reportable by agreement' tumors within required regulatory timeframes
  • Assign appropriate case status and analyze complete patient medical records using current oncology data standards
  • Enter accurate codes and text into the Metriq cancer registry software, including demographics, staging, treatment, recurrence, and disease status
  • Complete an average of 8 full case equivalents per day
  • Ensure data quality through self-review, validation metafiles, and prompt correction of errors identified by QA coordinators
  • Maintain high accuracy rates as measured by internal QA review and NYS DOH error reports
  • Support special projects and priority cases as assigned by the Registry Manager

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Current Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification or Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification
  • 4+ years of current experience abstracting cases in an accredited facility
  • Associate's degree or certified vocational training with 7–10 years of relevant experience preferred; bachelor's degree preferred
  • At least 2 years of practical abstracting experience using DxYr2018 (or current) oncology coding
  • Current hands-on experience with Metriq cancer registry software
  • Thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and malignancy disease processes
  • Strong attention to detail and consistent accuracy in high-volume data abstraction
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, Outlook, and internet-based research tools
  • Ability to work autonomously, manage time effectively, and meet regulatory deadlines
